History of the Bergensbunad
The idea that Bergen should have its own bunad first appeared in 1936, when some people in Bergen heard that Oslo finally got its
own.
In 1957 the first Bergensbunad appeared, and different from other traditional bunads that where 100 - 400 years old, and had been changed a lot of times
over the years, the Bergensbunad was designed and manufactured from one person only, with all the details ready for
production. The Bergensbunad is designed by Haldis Nygård, who have copyright for the
product. The Bergensbunad is certified as a bunad.
It is made in the colors white black and dark blue.
The original silver for the Bergensbunad is composed by Egil Monsen, after a brooch made in 1870 by goldsmith Theodor Olsen, and from this brooch all the silverware for the Bergensbunad was designed, with
umbrella, raindrops and a symbol for the seven mountains that surround Bergen.
The silverware includes belt, shoebucles,
earrings, shawlbucle, cufflinks etc. etc.
As always, when you find a product that people
buys, there will be someone to copy it, but the
original silverware is marked E.M.S.
The Bergensbunad won the first price in a competition in Illinois, USA in 1978,- among all the bunads in the world, so the people in bergen really have a bunad to
be proud of.
