Rennebu and Meldal Mans bunad

even3.JPG (52938 bytes)even.jpg (52178 bytes)

This is my good friend Even, in his Rennebu and his Meldal Mans bunad. He is a folk-dancer. He owns 3 bunads from different parts of Norway where his ancestry is. The hat he is wearing is not because it is christmas, it is to be used with these bunads!

The jacket is the same on both.

Ragnar sent me this picture. Here you can see his waistcoat, very rare. Thank you Ragnar for sending me the picture!

More about the Rennebu and Meldal Mans bunad

The costumes traditions in the districts of Rennebu and Meldal was so much alike, that they decided to make one common mans bunad, but with local variations. Both written and oral sources together with pictures and old traditional costumes material was used to make this bunad.

There are 3 different waistcoats used with this bunad. You can see Even has two different, and the third one is very rare. It is said that it was only one - the original, and then Ragnar got his. You can see it on his picture.

The blue wadmal waistcoat has woolen embroideries in six different colours, the back is made of linen. Then there is a red waistcoat, and the third one with woven stripes.

The jacket is made in blue wadmal with green edges, and 7 pair of buttons. There are also buttons on the pockets, the sleeves, on the back and on the collar. All in all 30 buttons!

The trousers is made in light moose-leather or blue, black or "sheep-black" wadmal, the shirt in white linen or cotton.

It is two different hats to this bunad, either the red and white knitted hat, or a black hat.
