More about the Beltestakk

The ‘Beltestakk’ is a bunad with its skirt characterised by the wide,
tablet-woven sashed belt that is wound several times round the
waist. The ‘Raudtrøye’ bunad gradually altered after the 1840s,
and this led to what we now know as the ‘Beltestakk’ from east
Telemark. When the ‘Beltestakk’ started to be worn again at the
beginning of the 1960s, many people possessed the costume, or
parts of it, as family heirlooms, which resulted in a good number of
variations and not many stipulations as to how it should look.
This bunad reflects the pietistic inclinations of the period and is
consequently made in dark colours, but the sashes and shirt
embroidery are colourful. Having silk scarves hanging down from
the sash and over the skirt was regarded as a status symbol, and
these were often presented as gifts by suitors. As you can see on the
picture, no two ‘Beltestakk’ are identical, but they all have the same cut.

The background is "søljer" for the Beltestakk. The small one is the barleycorn brooch to be fastened under the neckband on the shirt. The big one is the silver brooch with semi-precious stones and cupped discs. This brooch is made by Berit Kowalski in Skien.
