More about the Girls bunad from Voss

Virtually all the girls in Voss wear the girl’s bunad at their
confirmation, according to local sources. The old tradition is being
preserved here. It is not uncommon for children to have their own
bunads, from as early as two years old. This costume is a
somewhat simplified copy of the girl’s bunad. One of the old
costume traditions in Voss concerns the different kind of
headwear worn by married and unmarried women. The former still
wear the ‘nasteduk’, while unmarried women and girls are
bareheaded. In the 19th century there was a special headband,
known as the ‘black border’, for festive occasions. It was also
customary to plait the hair with ribbons and wear a headscarf.
